Suppressor-ready pistols have changed considerably since this article was originally published. Threaded barrels, optic-ready slides and taller sights that were once considered specialty features are now available from the factory on many popular handgun platforms.

But those features also create an important question:

Will a suppressor-ready pistol fit a normal holster?

The answer depends on the firearm, barrel length, sight height and the way the holster was designed.

Dara Holsters manufactures firearm-specific holsters for hundreds of handgun configurations, including many factory suppressor-ready pistols. Our current holster designs accommodate front sights up to .5 inches tall, and our open-ended muzzle design allows many threaded barrels to extend through the end of the holster when necessary.

This guide explains how suppressor-ready pistol holster fit works and covers 10 of the most relevant factory suppressor-ready handgun platforms available today.

What Is a Suppressor-Ready Pistol?

A suppressor-ready pistol is generally a handgun configured from the factory with features intended to support the installation of a suppressor or other muzzle device.

Common suppressor-ready features include:

• A threaded barrel
• A removable thread protector
• Taller or suppressor-height sights
• An optics-ready slide
• A recoil system designed or tested for suppressed use
• Extended barrel length beyond the standard slide

Not every pistol marketed as "tactical" includes all of these features, and not every threaded-barrel pistol has suppressor-height sights.

For holster fitment, the two features that generally matter most are the additional barrel length and the height of the sights.

Can Dara Holsters Accommodate Suppressor-Height Sights?

Yes. Current Dara holsters are designed with a sight channel that accommodates sights up to .5 inches tall.

This allows our current holster designs to accommodate many factory suppressor-height sight configurations without requiring a separate holster simply because the pistol has taller sights.

That .5-inch measurement refers to the height of the sight itself. Extremely unusual aftermarket sights or other modifications should still be verified before ordering.

Can a Threaded Barrel Extend Through the Bottom of a Dara Holster?

Yes. Dara holsters use an open-ended muzzle design, which allows many threaded barrels to extend slightly beyond the muzzle end of the holster.

This is particularly useful when a suppressor-ready version of a pistol uses the same frame and slide dimensions as its standard counterpart but adds additional barrel length for the threaded portion.

The firearm still needs to belong to the correct holster fit family. The presence of an open muzzle does not mean that an unrelated firearm will fit simply because its barrel can pass through the opening.

Can I Select the Next-Longer Pistol Size for a Threaded Barrel?

Sometimes, and this can be an excellent solution when both firearms use the same Dara holster body.

If a threaded-barrel pistol belongs to a firearm family where the frame, trigger guard and critical retention geometry are the same, selecting the next-longer version can provide additional muzzle coverage for the extended barrel.

For example, Dara uses this approach with several confirmed firearm families.

FN 509 Family

The FN 509 family shares compatible holster geometry across multiple supported models. When the particular configuration is confirmed by Dara, a longer FN 509 holster can be used to provide the additional length needed for a threaded-barrel model.

Compatible Glock Families

Dara also has confirmed holster families across numerous Glock models, including compatible configurations within the Glock 17, 19, 22, 23, 31, 32 and 34 families.

If the shorter and longer models share the same Dara holster body and retention geometry, selecting the longer compatible model can provide additional coverage for a threaded barrel.

Do not apply this rule universally. Similar model names do not automatically mean two firearms share the same holster. Generation, caliber, frame dimensions, trigger guard geometry, mounted accessories and other changes can affect compatibility.

Do You Holster a Pistol With the Suppressor Attached?

No. The holsters discussed in this guide are designed to accommodate suppressor-ready features such as threaded barrels and taller sights, not a firearm with a suppressor installed.

The suppressor should be removed before inserting the firearm into a standard Dara holster unless a product is specifically designed and identified for a different configuration.

1. FN 509 Tactical

The FN 509 Tactical remains one of the best-known factory suppressor-ready striker-fired pistols and continues to be an important platform for Dara holster customers.

FN designed the 509 Tactical with both suppressor and optic use in mind. The threaded barrel extends beyond the slide and the taller iron sights are designed to co-witness through many mounted optics.

The FNX-45 Tactical remains one of the most recognizable factory suppressor-ready .45 ACP pistols.

The HK VP9 A1 Tactical is one of the newest additions to this list.

HK expanded the VP9 A1 family in 2026 with factory Tactical versions featuring threaded barrels and suppressor-height sights.

The current Tactical lineup includes:

• VP9 A1 K Tactical: 4.7-inch threaded barrel with compact frame
• VP9 A1 X Tactical: 4.7-inch threaded barrel with full-size frame
• VP9 A1 F Tactical: 5.2-inch threaded barrel with full-size configuration

The Tactical models are optics-ready and incorporate the updates introduced with the newer VP9 A1 platform.

Because HK now offers several VP9 A1 frame and barrel combinations, make sure you identify the exact K, X or F configuration rather than simply ordering for "VP9."

4. Walther PDP Pro SD

The Walther PDP Pro SD combines Walther's optics-ready PDP platform with a factory threaded barrel.

The modern version of the original CZ P-10 suppressor-ready concept is the CZ P-10 C OR SR.

OR SR stands for Optics-Ready, Suppressor-Ready.

The Beretta M9A4 combines the traditional Beretta 90-series operating system with several modern features.

Additional Suppressor-Ready Pistols Dara Can Accommodate

This list is not intended to represent every threaded-barrel or suppressor-ready handgun Dara supports.

For example, Dara recently expanded support for the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 M2.0 Metal family, including the M&P 9 M2.0 Metal with 4.62-inch threaded barrel.

That model provides an excellent example of using a longer holster within the same confirmed firearm family.

Dara recommends selecting the M&P 9 M2.0 Metal Full Size 5-inch holster for the 4.62-inch threaded-barrel Metal model. The 5-inch holster provides enough length to cover the extended barrel while retaining the correct M&P Metal frame geometry.

Why Threaded-Barrel Length Matters to Holster Fit

A threaded barrel generally extends farther forward than the standard barrel installed in the same pistol.

There are several ways a holster manufacturer can account for that difference:

• Use an open muzzle so the threaded portion can extend through the bottom.
• Produce a longer holster body.
• Use a longer compatible model from the same confirmed holster family.
• Create a dedicated mold or firearm option when the geometry requires it.

Which solution is appropriate depends on the firearm.

This is why Dara does not simply use a universal rule such as "add half an inch for every threaded barrel."

Why Suppressor-Height Sight Clearance Matters

Factory suppressor-ready pistols commonly use taller iron sights so the shooter can maintain a usable sight picture above a suppressor or co-witness the sights through certain optics.

A holster with a sight channel designed only around standard-height sights can contact those taller sights during the draw.

Dara's current holsters are designed with a sight channel capable of accommodating sights up to .5 inches tall.

This also helps accommodate many popular optic co-witness and suppressor-height sight configurations without requiring a different shell solely because the iron sights are taller.

What About Red-Dot Optics?

Many modern suppressor-ready pistols are also optics-ready.

Examples on this list include the FN 509 Tactical, Walther PDP Pro SD, CZ P-10 C OR SR, HK VP9 A1 Tactical, Springfield Echelon, Glock 19X MOS and other current tactical models.

Dara's current holsters are optics-ready where specified, but extremely large or unusually positioned optics may require additional clearance.

A suppressor-ready pistol may still be modified beyond its factory configuration.

Changes that can potentially affect holster fit include:

Light-Bearing Suppressor-Ready Pistols

A threaded barrel and suppressor-height sights do not determine whether a firearm will fit a light-bearing holster.

The weapon light becomes a major part of the holster geometry.

If your suppressor-ready pistol also uses a Streamlight, SureFire or another supported weapon-mounted light, select the exact firearm/light combination from the appropriate Dara light-bearing holster product.

Do not select a standard non-light-bearing holster and assume the additional muzzle clearance will accommodate the weapon light.
