Choosing the Right Hood for Your Duty Holster: Standard vs. Large

Published by Dara Holsters on May 21, 2024

What's up guys! In today's post, we're going to take a closer look at our duty holster options, specifically focusing on the two different hood sizes available: the regular hood and the large hood. We'll help you determine when to order the large hood and when the regular hood will suffice based on your optic setup.

Understanding Hood Sizes

For most of you, the regular hood is going to be just fine. It's designed to accommodate a variety of optics commonly used by firearm owners. However, if you carry an optic with an enclosed emitter that extends all the way to the back with a full height profile, you'll need the large hood to ensure a proper fit and secure hold.

Common Optics and Their Compatibility

Let's dive into some specific examples. Typical armor-sized optics like the Romeo1 and Delta Point Pro generally fit well with the regular hood. However, the Delta Point Pro can sometimes be a bit tall depending on the optic plate and firearm, due to its battery housing. Similarly, the SRO might have issues because of its height and the forward-facing window sometimes overlapping the ejection port.

For those of you using very large enclosed emitter optics, it's crucial to order the large hood. This ensures your optic is properly protected and your firearm remains securely holstered.

Key Optic Models to Consider

Romeo1 and Delta Point Pro

  • The Romeo1 fits comfortably with the regular hood.
  • The Delta Point Pro might require the large hood, depending on your firearm and optic plate setup.

Trijicon SRO

  • The SRO’s height and forward-facing window might necessitate the large hood, especially if it extends over the ejection port.

Other Optics

  • If you use other large enclosed emitter optics, the large hood is recommended to accommodate the oversized profile.

How to Choose the Right Hood

When browsing our website, you'll find listings for regular and large hoods with examples of compatible optics. If your optic isn't listed, consider the profile and size of your optic to determine the best hood size. If your optic has a large, enclosed emitter or extends significantly in height, opt for the large hood.

For example, if you have an optic with a profile that fits the oversized category, such as the Trijicon RMR or Holosun, the large hood will provide the necessary clearance and security.
