When it comes to weapon retention for duty holsters, there is no substitute for testing under pressure.

At Dara Holsters, we believe a Level 3 duty holster should be evaluated beyond static range drills. A duty holster may be subjected to pulling, twisting, body weight, awkward angles, ground fighting, and attempts by another person to gain access to the firearm.

That is why we took an early D3 Level 3 Holster prototype to the mats at Meta Jiu Jitsu Academy inside Rich's Gym and put it through a controlled, high-intensity weapon-retention scenario.

The goal was not to stage a perfect demonstration. We wanted to create a situation where the holster, the wearer, and the retention system were exposed to aggressive pressure from multiple angles.

What Is the Dara D3 Level 3 Duty Holster?

The D3 Duty Holster is Dara's next-generation modular duty-holster platform.

The current D3 design combines an automatic Ejection Port Locking system (EPL) with a Rapid-Deploy Hood to create a repeatable retention and draw sequence.

The platform is also designed around modular protection components, allowing the user to configure elements such as the optic shroud, patrol guard, and Level III hood assembly while maintaining the same primary holster body.

What Is a Level 3 Duty Holster?

A Level III duty holster uses multiple retention mechanisms intended to resist unauthorized removal of the firearm while still allowing the trained user to access the firearm through a deliberate draw sequence.

Retention terminology can vary between manufacturers, so the most useful way to understand a Level 3 holster is to look at the actual mechanisms involved rather than relying only on the name.

In general, a duty holster may use:

  • Passive retention – resistance created by the fit of the firearm inside the holster.
  • Active retention – a mechanism that must be intentionally disengaged during the draw.
  • Additional active retention – another independent mechanism or locking point designed to increase resistance to unauthorized firearm removal.

The D3 approaches Level III retention through a combination of its internal EPL locking system and Rapid-Deploy Hood.

How the D3 Level 3 Retention System Works

Automatic EPL: Ejection Port Locking System

One of the central features of the D3 is its automatic Ejection Port Locking system.

When the firearm is properly seated in the holster, the EPL engages internally around the ejection-port area of the firearm.

The important part is that the system is designed to engage automatically when the firearm is holstered. The user does not need to remember to manually activate this internal locking point after reholstering.

This gives the D3 an internal retention mechanism that works independently from the external hood.

Rapid-Deploy Hood

The second major component is the Rapid-Deploy Hood.

The hood provides another active retention layer and is designed to be intentionally disengaged as part of the draw sequence.

The current D3 design also incorporates a manual power override so the hood can still be accessed if the system becomes obstructed.

Modular Protection System

The D3 also includes a modular protection system built around removable components.

These include:

  • A removable patrol guard
  • A removable optic shroud
  • A removable Level III hood assembly

This allows the D3 to be configured around different user requirements without requiring an entirely different primary holster body.

Can the D3 Be Converted From Level 3 to Level 2?

Yes. The D3 platform is designed so the Level III hood assembly can be removed, allowing the holster to be configured as a Level II retention system while maintaining the primary holster body and internal EPL retention system.

This modularity allows a user or agency to configure the platform around different roles, policies, training requirements, or equipment preferences.

Why We Grapple-Tested the D3

Static range testing is useful, but it cannot reproduce every type of force a duty holster may experience during a physical confrontation.

A ground fight can expose a holster to:

  • Direct pulling on the firearm
  • Twisting forces
  • Body weight applied against the holster
  • Attempts to reach retention controls
  • Pressure from unusual angles
  • Changes in leverage as both people move
  • Fatigue over an extended struggle

We wanted to see how the prototype behaved when those variables were introduced at the same time.

Who Tested the D3?

We paired two experienced individuals with very different roles in the test.

Jacob Horton

Jacob Horton is a SWAT Commander, 13-year law-enforcement officer, and Jiu Jitsu purple belt.

His background made him particularly useful for this test because he understands both duty equipment and the realities of controlling another person during a physical confrontation.

Samson

Samson is a Jiu Jitsu black belt, owner and lead instructor at DAGR Management, with additional experience in sambo, judo, and wrestling.

His role was not to perform a scripted technique. His objective was to aggressively attempt to remove the firearm while Jacob actively resisted.

The Test: Grappling for the Gun

The objective was straightforward:

  • Jacob's mission: prevent the firearm from being removed from the holster.
  • Samson's mission: gain access to the firearm and remove it using realistic grappling pressure and positioning.

Important: This was a controlled R&D test conducted in a training environment. Both participants applied heavy resistance without intentionally attempting to injure one another.

What We Were Testing

The goal of the exercise was to observe several things at once:

  • Whether the firearm remained retained during aggressive grappling
  • Whether an opponent could access the retention controls
  • How different body positions affected access to the holster
  • How the system handled multidirectional pulling and twisting forces
  • How fatigue affected the defender's ability to protect the firearm
  • How mechanical retention and defensive skill interacted

What This Test Was Not

This was not a standardized certification test, and it does not prove that any holster can prevent every possible firearm-removal attempt.

This was an R&D exercise designed to expose the D3 prototype to aggressive angles, pressure, and body movement that are difficult to reproduce during static testing.

The value of the test came from observing how the prototype behaved and identifying areas that could be refined through continued development.

Key Observations From the Fight

1. Hand Fighting Was Just as Important as the Holster

Jacob's ability to control Samson's hands and keep them away from the retention controls was a major factor in maintaining possession of the firearm.

This demonstrated an important reality: a retention holster and weapon-retention training work together.

A holster can create additional barriers and buy the wearer time, but the user still has to protect the firearm and maintain positional control.

2. Multiple Retention Mechanisms Created Additional Barriers

During the test, Samson was sometimes able to gain partial access to one part of the retention system.

That did not automatically result in firearm removal.

The combination of multiple retention points and Jacob's ability to control Samson's hands created additional obstacles between initial contact with the holster and removal of the firearm.

3. Body Position Changed Access to the Controls

One of the most useful observations from grappling was how dramatically access to the holster changed as both people moved.

A retention control that is easily accessible during a standing draw can become shielded by the wearer's body, compressed against the ground, or difficult for an opponent to reach during a scramble.

This is one reason we wanted to test the D3 outside of a normal standing draw sequence.

4. Fatigue Changes Weapon-Retention Performance

After extended grappling, both participants experienced significant fatigue.

That matters because physical exhaustion can reduce grip strength, coordination, reaction speed, and the ability to maintain ideal defensive positioning.

Mechanical retention becomes especially important when the wearer's physical performance begins to decline.

A Level 3 Holster Does Not Replace Weapon-Retention Training

One of the most important lessons from the test had nothing to do with the holster itself.

Weapon retention is a combination of:

  1. Mechanical retention – the holster creates barriers against unauthorized firearm removal.
  2. User skill – the wearer protects the firearm, controls the opponent, and maintains positional awareness.

As Samson explained during the post-test discussion:

"You can't out-buy your skill set. The holster buys you time — your training decides the outcome."

That principle is central to the D3 development process.

We do not design retention equipment around the assumption that the holster alone solves every weapon-retention problem. The goal is to provide a strong mechanical system that works alongside proper training.

The D3 Wasn't Designed in One Test

The grappling test shown here was only one part of the D3 development process.

The platform has continued to evolve through testing and feedback from law-enforcement officers, military personnel, executive-protection professionals, firearms instructors, and experienced shooters.

The development process follows a continuous cycle:

Prototype → Test → Collect Feedback → Revise → Test Again

This process has helped shape the current EPL locking system, Rapid-Deploy Hood, protection components, optic coverage, and overall modular design.

Why the D3 Uses a Modular Design

Duty-holster requirements are not identical for every user.

One officer may want maximum optic protection and Level III retention. Another user may prefer a less enclosed configuration or Level II retention for a different assignment.

The D3 was designed so these choices can be made within the same platform.

Rather than building every configuration as a completely different holster, components such as the patrol guard, optic shroud, and hood assembly can be configured around the primary holster body.

Enclosed Optic Protection

Slide-mounted red-dot optics have become increasingly common on duty handguns.

The D3 was developed with enclosed optic protection as part of the overall platform.

The removable optic shroud helps protect the optic from impacts and external contact while still allowing the holster to be configured differently if the user does not require the same level of coverage.

Single-Piece Thermoformed Construction

The D3 uses a single-piece thermoformed holster body.

This construction allows Dara to maintain the durability expected from a professional duty holster while also developing firearm-specific fits as new duty handgun platforms enter the market.

Firearm compatibility is an important part of the D3 project because a retention system only works properly when the underlying holster is correctly fitted to the firearm.
