Premium Small of Back Concealed Carry Holster

The Dara Small of Back (SOB) Palm Out Holster is designed for concealed carriers who prefer carrying behind the hip at the 5-6 o'clock position (right-handed shooters) or the 6-7 o'clock position (left-handed shooters). This carry method positions the grip of the firearm towards the draw hand using a reverse cant, allowing for a natural palm-out draw while keeping the firearm tucked close to the body for excellent concealment.

Every holster is made to order for your exact firearm model. Unlike universal holsters that attempt to fit dozens of different handguns, each Dara holster is precision molded and test-fit to the specific firearm you select, providing consistent retention, a smooth draw, and a secure fit.

Please note that this specific holster is not compatible with a light attachment. For light compatibility, see our Light bearing Small of Back Holster.

What Is a Small of Back Holster?

A Small of Back holster is an inside the waistband (IWB) holster worn just behind the hip near the center of your back. Unlike traditional strong-side carry, the firearm is positioned with the grip angled upward using a reverse cant, allowing the shooter to draw with the palm facing outward.

For many concealed carriers, this position provides excellent concealment under untucked shirts, jackets, hoodies, and other cover garments while keeping the firearm tucked close to the body's natural contours.

Why Choose Small of Back Carry?

Small of back carry has remained popular for decades because it offers several advantages over other concealed carry positions.

Benefits of Small of Back Carry

  • Easy, comfortable draw for those with back or shoulder injuries
  • Excellent concealment under loose clothing
  • Keeps the grip tucked close to the body
  • Comfortable while standing and walking
  • Natural draw stroke when configured correctly
  • Ideal for users who prefer carrying behind the hip
  • Minimal printing with proper clothing and belt

Many users also appreciate that the grip is less likely to print through clothing compared to some other carry positions.

Recommended Ride Height and Cant

For the best balance of comfort, concealment, and accessibility, we recommend:

  • High Ride Height
  • Reverse Cant

This configuration positions the grip high enough to establish a full firing grip while keeping the firearm comfortably tucked against your body.

A lower ride height can bury the grip below the belt line, making the firearm more difficult to access, especially when combined with a reverse cant.

Use the ride height and cant angle diagrams found in the product images to determine the setup that best fits your carry style. Or watch this video on ride heights and cant angles: https://youtu.be/l_rRY0GhjXs?si=p-J_C_bzlAo5TH_f

Precision Retention

Unlike soft nylon or universal holsters, every Dara holster is molded specifically for your firearm.

Our adjustable rubber retention system allows you to fine-tune the draw to your preference using a simple quarter-turn adjustment. When properly adjusted, the firearm should seat securely with a positive retention point while still allowing a smooth, consistent draw.

Each holster is fit tested with the actual firearm prior to shipment to ensure a perfect fit.

Choosing the Right Belt Attachment

Selecting the proper belt attachment helps maximize stability and comfort. Our most common attachment is the belt clip.

  • 1.5" belts are the most common for everyday concealed carry.
  • 1.75" belts are popular for reinforced tactical belts.
  • 2"–2.25" options are typically used with duty belts.

Using the correct belt size helps keep the holster stable during movement and drawing.

    Super strong and comfortable

  • Great so far! 5

I have only had the opportunity to use the holster a few times so far, but the fit and finish are excellent, and the ECR turns my Viridian laser on when I draw, and off when I holster perfectly. I was impressed that the belt clip was able to keep the holster in place on a pair of shorts that had no provision for a belt.

I am very impressed with this holster - it is thin and light - I also appreciate a holster designed for Palm out right handed draw from small of the back, most other assume palm in draw - Excellent product -

  • Very comfortable 4

I would have given this product 5 stars, but due to my own choice to use the J-hook attachment, instead of the 1 and a half inch belt loop, it comes lose sometimes. Other than that, I love it. As you get older, it's more comfortable to draw your pistol from the SOB position with palm-out, than with palm-in.

  • love my holste!! 5

My glock fits this holster like a glove with my viridian with ecr! I wanted something for the small of my back and not my side (they make me feel uncomfortable and hurt) but my new holster is perfect! I would highly recommend dara holsters! They took weeks to make it but well worth the wait! Fits very comfortably. My holster is small of back, 30° angle, left draw (this let's me swing out when drawing from my right hand), high ride. I wanted to draw from an angle in an emergency. This holster let's me be discreet in going for my gun. You're at the right place for a custom holster.

I am totally satisfied with my small if the back holster.

  • Great holster, terrible wait time/updating 5

Posted by Dan on Jun 14, 2016

The holster itself gets a 5 star rating. It is obviously well built, made of rugged materials and is comfortable to wear. I have a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm with Viridian R5 Green Laser. The ECR works just as it should it fits like a glove. I got the small of back, medium rise at a 15° angle. This angle is a little too much, it puts the grip almost parallel with my belt so it's a bit hard to grab quickly. This is not the fault of Dara, it is my own for not having done more research before ordering. I will request an extra clip (or just buy one that will fit) so that I can drill new holes in it to make the angle less than 15°, should be a good fix for my mistake. Overall, I am happy with this holster. My only gripes are; that it was such a long wait (order was placed April 25th, received holster June 8th) and that there were no status updates to show the progress of the order on the website other than "Awaiting fulfillment". Dara does point out how long the wait times are, I just wish I didn't have to wait so long. I would refer Dara to friends and would likely purchase from them again in the future.

I love it. Its very thin but still strong. The retention is good. I can runaround, do whatever without ever feeling nervious that my Canik will come loose. Thanks for the great Holster and I will be spreading the word to my friends about you guys.
