The D3 Duty Holster was built around three priorities: a retention system you can trust, a platform that adapts to your needs, and the ability to support the firearms people actually carry. Its retention system combines an automatic Ejection Port Locking (EPL) mechanism with a Rapid-Deploy Hood to provide intuitive operation, positive firearm retention and a repeatable draw sequence. The modular design allows the optic shroud, patrol guard, and Level III hood assembly to be configured to suit individual requirements while maintaining the same holster body. By utilizing thermoformed Kydex construction, the D3 offers the durability expected of a professional duty holster while allowing us to efficiently develop new firearm fits as duty handgun platforms continue to evolve. The D3 system was developed through extensive evaluation and feedback from the people it was built for, receiving continuous input from law enforcement officers, military personnel, executive protection professionals, firearms instructors, and experienced shooters who helped refine the design through every stage of development.
One highly requested feature from our customers has been the ability to remove a weapon-mounted light while still maintaining solid retention in a light-bearing holster. In this D3 Duty Holster update, we're showing a new prototype solution that's designed to do exactly that. This removable barrel plug system installs in the muzzle end of the holster and uses a tapered cone with a high-temperature silicone grommet to stabilize the barrel when a weapon light isn't installed. The result is a more secure fit that helps eliminate the rocking and muzzle dive commonly found in traditional light-bearing holsters when the light is removed. This is still an in-development feature, but it's one we've been working to perfect based directly on customer feedback. Our goal is to provide a duty holster that offers maximum versatility without sacrificing retention or reliability. That’s why we took our Level 3 Holster prototype to the mats at Meta Jiu Jitsu Academy inside Rich’s Gym, pairing two highly skilled fighters in a controlled, high-intensity retention scenario to see how it truly performs under pressure.
What Is a Level 3 Duty Holster?
A Level 3 holster incorporates three steps to secure a firearm. This setup is designed for law enforcement, military, and high-security applications where the risk of a weapon grab is high.
In a real-world confrontation, an officer or armed professional may be taken to the ground. A Level 3 holster’s job is to keep the firearm secure long enough for the wearer to maintain control or regain it under extreme stress.
The Test: Grappling for the Gun
We teamed up with two subject matter experts:

Jacob Horton – SWAT Commander, 13-year Law Enforcement Officer, and Purple Belt in Jiu Jitsu.

Samson – Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu, Owner and Lead Instructor at DAGR Management, with a background in sambo, judo, and wrestling.
The objective was simple: Jacob’s mission — keep his firearm in the holster at all costs. Samson’s mission — get the gun out, using realistic grappling techniques and aggressive pressure.
Note: This was a controlled test. Both fighters pushed each other to the limit, applying full resistance, but without intentionally injuring one another, simulating realistic retention pressure in a safe training environment.

1. Hand Fighting Wins Retention Battles
Jacob’s ability to control Samson’s hands — and prevent them from reaching the retention buttons — proved to be just as important as the holster’s mechanical design.

Even when Samson managed to defeat the first retention level, Jacob’s control prevented access to the others, keeping the gun in place.
