Smith & Wesson Holster Compatibility Guide

Smith & Wesson has used names such as M&P, M&P M2.0, Shield, Shield Plus, Shield EZ and J-Frame across multiple generations, calibers, frame materials and firearm configurations. Those names alone do not determine holster compatibility.

This guide explains which Smith & Wesson firearms Dara Holsters currently supports, which models share Dara holster fitments, which models require dedicated tooling, and what details you should verify before ordering.

Important: All compatibility information on this page refers specifically to holsters manufactured by Dara Holsters. Dara designs, manufactures, tests and maintains its own firearm-specific tooling and can only verify compatibility with Dara holsters.

Compatibility data last reviewed: September 2026. Dara updates this resource as new Smith & Wesson models are evaluated and new holster fitments enter production.

Smith & Wesson Holster Compatibility: Quick Answer

Supported M&P 9mm and .40 S&W pistols within the same Dara-supported model family generally use the same Dara holster fitment. However, M&P Metal pistols require dedicated Metal tooling, M&P .45 models are not part of the 9mm/.40 S&W interchangeability group, several Shield models require different holsters, Shield EZ models are a separate platform, and Dara's J-Frame fitment is limited to specific 5-shot .38 Special revolvers.

Before choosing a Smith & Wesson holster, confirm the exact firearm model, generation, barrel length, caliber, frame material, thumb-safety configuration and weapon-mounted light.

How Do I Know Which Smith & Wesson I Have?

Do not rely on the words "M&P" or "Shield" alone when choosing a holster. Smith & Wesson has used these names across firearms with different dimensions and operating systems.

Before ordering, confirm:

• Exact firearm model
• Original M&P or M&P M2.0 generation
• Polymer or Metal frame
• Barrel length
• Caliber
• Manual thumb safety or no thumb safety
• Weapon-mounted light model, if equipped
• Factory compensator or threaded barrel, if applicable

If you are unsure which firearm you own, do not select the closest-looking model from the menu. Contact Dara Holsters before ordering so the correct fitment can be verified.

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm and .40 S&W Holster Compatibility

For Dara Holsters specifically, corresponding supported polymer-frame M&P pistols chambered in 9mm and .40 S&W use the same Dara holster fitment when they are the same model and frame configuration.

For example, an M&P M2.0 Compact 9mm and the corresponding M&P M2.0 Compact .40 S&W use the same Dara holster body.

This compatibility applies only to Dara-tested fitments and should not be interpreted as universal compatibility with holsters made by other manufacturers.

If you have the older 3.5" M&P Compact, select the M&P M2.0 Compact 3.6" option. The firearm will fit; the holster will simply extend slightly farther past the muzzle.

What Is the Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0?

Smith & Wesson introduced the M&P M2.0 generation after the original polymer-frame M&P platform had already been on the market for more than a decade.

Smith & Wesson described the M2.0 generation as an evolution of the original M&P and highlighted changes including a crisper trigger, a more tactile and audible reset, more aggressive grip texture and four interchangeable palmswell grip sizes.

Those changes do not automatically mean every original M&P and M&P M2.0 requires completely different holster geometry.

How M&P M1.0 and M2.0 Fit Dara Holsters

When the M2.0 series was introduced, Dara found that many corresponding original M&P and M&P M2.0 pistols were similar enough to physically fit the same earlier Dara tooling.

The important exception was the M&P M2.0 Compact 4". That model did not behave the same as the other corresponding M&P models and required the correct M2.0 Compact 4" fitment.

Dara later developed production tooling specifically around the M2.0 firearms as part of our normal tooling replacement and fit-verification process.

Today, an original M&P may physically enter a corresponding M&P M2.0 Dara holster, but the frame dimensions are not identical and may exceed the tolerances Dara uses for current production.

Physically fitting into the holster does not automatically mean Dara considers the fit correct.

Why Barrel Length Is Not the Only Measurement That Matters

Two firearms can have the same barrel length and still require different holsters. Likewise, firearms with slightly different barrel lengths can sometimes share a holster when the rest of the geometry is compatible.

Dara evaluates areas including:

• Trigger guard geometry
• Frame width
• Dust cover dimensions
• Accessory rail geometry
• Slide dimensions
• Barrel and slide length
• Manual thumb safety location and size
• External controls
• Factory compensators
• Threaded barrels
• Weapon-mounted lights & lasergrips
• Cylinder dimensions on revolvers
• Other external contours that affect seating or retention

This is why Dara can confirm that an older 3.5" M&P Compact fits the 3.6" holster with a small amount of extra muzzle coverage while also requiring a dedicated fitment for a different M&P with similar dimensions.

M&P Metal vs. Polymer M&P M2.0

The M&P M2.0 Metal and polymer-frame M&P M2.0 share similar naming, but Dara does not treat them as the same firearm for holster fitment.

The Metal platform changes frame geometry enough to affect how the firearm seats and retains inside a close-fitting thermoformed holster. Differences can include frame contours, dust-cover geometry, rail dimensions and trigger-guard geometry.

A Metal pistol may physically enter some polymer M&P holsters, but that does not mean the fit meets Dara's production standards.

Dara developed dedicated holster tooling for the M&P Metal platform rather than modifying or reusing the polymer M&P molds.

If you have the M&P 9 M2.0 Metal Carry Comp 4.22", select the M&P 9 M2.0 Metal Full Size 4.25" Dara fitment.

If you have the M&P 9 M2.0 Metal with a 4.62" threaded barrel, select the M&P 9 M2.0 Metal Full Size 5" fitment. The additional holster length fully covers the 4.62" barrel.

Smith & Wesson Shield Holster Compatibility

Smith & Wesson has used the name "Shield" on multiple firearms that should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.

Dara supports several Shield-family pistols, but compatibility is determined from the actual firearm geometry rather than the Shield name alone.

Original M&P Shield

The original M&P Shield was introduced as a thinner concealed-carry member of the M&P family. Dara supports the original Shield in applicable 9mm, .40 S&W and supported configurations.

Dara currently supports the original Shield 3.1" fitment and related supported configurations listed in our firearm menus.

M&P Shield M2.0

The Shield M2.0 brought M2.0-generation changes into the Shield line.

From Dara's own fit-testing experience, the original Shield and Shield M2.0 have slightly different frame dimensions, while their trigger-guard geometry is very similar.

Customers should still select the exact Shield model and barrel length offered in the Dara firearm menu rather than assuming every Shield-generation pistol is identical.

M&P Shield .45

The M&P Shield .45 requires its own Dara holster fitment.

Do not select a 9mm or .40 S&W Shield fitment for a Shield .45 simply because both firearms carry the Shield name.

What Is the M&P Shield Plus?

The Shield Plus expanded the Shield platform with increased magazine capacity, a revised grip configuration and a flat-face trigger while retaining the general concealed-carry purpose of the Shield family.

Dara treats the Shield Plus as its own supported firearm fitment. Customers should select Shield Plus when that option is offered rather than assuming an original Shield or Shield M2.0 holster is automatically correct.

Does Dara Make a Shield X Holster?

No. Dara does not currently offer a holster for the Smith & Wesson Shield X.

The Shield X is not simply another barrel-length version of the original Shield or Shield Plus. It uses substantially different external geometry, including a different frame configuration, accessory rail and trigger-guard area.

Do not order an original Shield, Shield M2.0 or Shield Plus Dara holster for a Shield X.

What Is the Smith & Wesson Shield EZ?

The Shield EZ is not simply a standard Shield with an easier slide.

Smith & Wesson developed the EZ series around easier firearm manipulation, including an easier-to-rack slide and easier-to-load magazine. The .380 EZ was introduced first, followed by the 9mm version.

The EZ platform uses different dimensions and operating characteristics from the traditional Shield family, so Dara treats EZ models as separate firearm fitments.

A Shield EZ should not be ordered as a standard M&P Shield.

Smith & Wesson J-Frame Holster Compatibility

Dara makes J-Frame holsters, but the term "J-Frame" alone is not enough to determine compatibility.

Dara's current J-Frame fitment is specifically made around the Smith & Wesson Model 442 and Model 642 chambered in .38 Special with a 5-shot cylinder.

A revolver being described as a J-Frame does not automatically mean it fits Dara's 442/642 holster.

We do not support the "Ultimate Carry" variant.

Smith & Wesson CSX Holster Compatibility

Dara currently supports the Smith & Wesson CSX 3.1" in available holster configurations.

Dara does not currently offer a Level 2 duty holster for the CSX.

Compatibility with newer CSX E-Series configurations has not been confirmed. Do not assume an E-Series firearm uses the same Dara holster until that configuration has been evaluated.

Smith & Wesson Thumb Safety Accommodation

Some Smith & Wesson pistols are available with an optional manual thumb safety. Whether a Dara Holster can accommodate that safety depends on the firearm family and the tooling used for that model.

How Dara Determines Smith & Wesson Holster Compatibility

Dara does not determine firearm compatibility from online dimensions, caliber or model names alone.

When developing a new firearm fitment, our process can include:

• Obtaining the actual firearm whenever possible
• Researching available factory variants and common configurations
• Laser scanning the firearm to create an accurate 3D model
• Digitally developing the firearm and holster geometry in CAD
• Designing dedicated production molds when a firearm requires different tooling
• Producing right- and left-hand tooling for supported holster models
• Evaluating frame, slide, trigger guard, rail, dust-cover and control geometry
• Testing firearm seating and retention points
• Testing draw weight and retention before releasing a new fitment
• Continuing production quality-control checks after the fitment is released

When Dara states that two Smith & Wesson models share a holster fitment, that conclusion is based on Dara's own molds, production experience and firearm testing.

When Dara states that two firearms are not compatible, it does not necessarily mean one firearm cannot physically be inserted into the other firearm's holster. It means the combination does not meet the fit, retention and manufacturing tolerances Dara uses for that product.

How a Dara Holster Is Manufactured

Dara Holsters designs and manufactures its holsters in Wendell, North Carolina using firearm-specific production tooling.

Depending on the product, Dara uses durable thermoformed materials such as Kydex and Boltaron. Material thickness and construction are selected for the intended holster application.

Once the correct firearm mold and material are selected, the holster shell is heated and formed using Dara's production equipment and custom presses. The part then moves through additional manufacturing stages that can include:

• Initial thermoforming around the firearm-specific mold
• Rough cutting the formed shell to the required profile and length
• Edge finishing and polishing
• Drilling retention and attachment locations
• Installing retention hardware and product-specific components
• Installing the selected belt attachment or mounting hardware
• Checking firearm seating
• Checking passive and active retention where applicable
• Checking draw resistance
• Inspecting fit, finish and function before shipment

Dara's made-to-order process allows the company to support a much wider range of firearms, barrel lengths, weapon lights, draw hands and holster configurations than would be practical with only prebuilt inventory.

Why Dara Periodically Replaces Production Tooling

Holster tooling does not remain in service indefinitely.

Dara's thermoforming molds repeatedly experience heat, vacuum pressure and normal manufacturing handling. Over time, production tooling takes wear.

If a mold is dropped, chipped, damaged or otherwise falls outside Dara's standards, it is replaced rather than risking inconsistent firearm fit.

Dara also periodically retools firearm models even when there is no obvious mold failure. Retooling allows the firearm dimensions and production fit to be verified again instead of assuming older tooling should remain in service forever.

This process is one reason Dara eventually created dedicated M&P M2.0 tooling rather than continuing to rely indefinitely on molds developed around earlier M&P firearms.

Dara Quality Control and Fit Testing

Producing a holster from the correct mold is only part of the process. Dara also checks finished holsters before shipment.

Quality-control inspections can include fit, finish, function and retention checks. Dara's production process uses multiple QC stages, and finished holsters are fit tested before they leave the facility.

For retention holsters, testing also includes verifying that the retention system engages and releases as intended. Dara has long used draw-weight and retention testing when validating new firearm fitments and production tooling.

The goal is not simply to make a firearm fit inside a piece of thermoformed material. The firearm must seat, retain and draw the way that Dara holster was designed to operate.

Made to Order Does Not Mean Universal Fit

Most Dara holsters are made to order around the firearm and options selected by the customer.

This allows Dara to support hundreds of firearm fits and a wide range of carry, competition and duty configurations, but it also means customers need to select the correct firearm, weapon light and setup when ordering.

If a firearm or light is not listed, do not select something that looks close and assume it will work.

Dara Lifetime No B.S. Warranty

Dara-manufactured holsters are backed by Dara's Lifetime No B.S. Warranty.

If a Dara holster fails because of a defect, material issue or a failure that should not have occurred under normal use, Dara will repair or replace the product according to the warranty policy.

The warranty should not be confused with incorrect firearm selection. Because most Dara holsters are made to order, selecting the wrong firearm, light or configuration does not turn the product into a warranty claim.

Customers should verify their exact firearm and equipment setup before ordering.

Will an M&P M2.0 Metal fit a polymer M&P M2.0 Dara holster?

No. Dara uses dedicated production tooling for the M&P Metal platform because its frame geometry differs from the polymer-frame M&P M2.0.

What Dara holster fits the M&P Metal Carry Comp 4.22"?

Select the M&P 9 M2.0 Metal Full Size 4.25" Dara fitment.

What Dara holster fits the M&P Metal with a 4.62" threaded barrel?

Select the M&P 9 M2.0 Metal Full Size 5" Dara fitment. The longer holster provides enough length to fully cover the 4.62" barrel.

Does the Performance Center M&P Metal Competitor 5" fit Dara's 5" Metal holster?

Yes. Dara's M&P 9 M2.0 Metal Full Size 5" fitment supports the Performance Center M&P 9 M2.0 Competitor 5" and Competitor HD 5".

Are all Smith & Wesson Shield pistols interchangeable in Dara holsters?

No. Original Shield, Shield M2.0, Shield Plus, Shield .45, Shield EZ and Shield X should not automatically be treated as interchangeable simply because they use the Shield name.

Does a Shield .45 fit a 9mm or .40 S&W Shield Dara holster?

No. The Shield .45 requires its own Dara holster fitment.

Does a Shield Plus fit a standard Shield Dara holster?

Do not assume that it does. Dara treats Shield Plus as its own supported firearm fitment and customers should select the exact Shield Plus option when offered.

Does Dara make a Shield X holster?

No. Dara does not currently make Shield X holsters. Do not order a Shield, Shield M2.0 or Shield Plus Dara holster for a Shield X.

Is the Shield EZ the same firearm as the standard M&P Shield?

No. The Shield EZ is a different firearm platform with different dimensions and operating characteristics. Dara treats it as a separate fitment.

Does a thumb safety affect Smith & Wesson holster compatibility?

It can. Dara can accommodate thumb safeties on some Smith & Wesson models but not others. Review the thumb-safety table on this page before ordering.

Do all Smith & Wesson J-Frames fit the same Dara holster?

No. Dara's current J-Frame fitment is specifically based on the supported 5-shot Model 442 and Model 642 chambered in .38 Special.

Do the Smith & Wesson 442 and 642 use the same Dara holster?

Yes, for the supported 5-shot .38 Special configurations.

Will a .357 Magnum J-Frame fit the Dara 442/642 .38 Special holster?

No. Dara's current J-Frame fitment is specifically for the supported .38 Special configurations.

Why does Dara ask for the exact firearm model?

Small differences in frame geometry, trigger guards, rails, controls, barrel length and other external dimensions can change how a firearm seats and retains in a thermoformed holster.

Why does Dara ask for the exact weapon light?

Light-bearing holsters are formed around both the firearm and the specific weapon-mounted light. Different light models have different dimensions and mounting positions and are not universally interchangeable.

What does "Dara-tested compatibility" mean?

It means the fitment information is based on Dara's own firearm-specific molds, manufacturing experience, production tooling and physical fit testing rather than model names alone.

What should I do if my exact Smith & Wesson is not listed?

Do not choose a similar-looking firearm and assume it will fit. Contact Dara Holsters or use the Firearm Request Form so the exact configuration can be evaluated.

Lasergrips and Integrated Lasers

Dara Holsters do not support Lasergrips or any firearm with an integrated laser. This includes Crimson Trace-style Lasergrips, frame-integrated lasers, trigger-guard-integrated lasers and other laser systems built into or attached to the firearm itself.

If your Smith & Wesson has an integrated laser, do not select the standard firearm model and assume it will fit. The additional laser housing changes the external dimensions of the firearm and can interfere with holster fit, seating and retention.

Optics Compatibility

All Dara Holsters are optics ready. Our holsters are designed to accommodate supported pistols equipped with slide-mounted red dot sights and other common handgun optics.

Optic compatibility does not change the need to select the correct firearm model, barrel length, frame configuration and weapon-mounted light. If your firearm uses an unusually large or non-standard optic setup, contact Dara Holsters before ordering to confirm clearance.
